Age Spot, Mole, & Freckle Removal
Performed at our Duluth, GA medical office, north of Atlanta.
Age spots, or liver spots, are caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun over a lifetime. Because they are generally associated with sun exposure, they appear most often on the face, hands, shoulders, arms, and even on the head if there is no hair to protect the scalp. While they pose no threat, sometimes they can get in the way of properly detecting skin cancer. However many individuals prefer to eliminate these signs of aging for cosmetic reasons.
Melanin is a dark pigment present in the skin and is produced by melanocytes; it is the main factor in skin tone as well as the formation of moles, freckles, and some brown age spots when this pigment multiplies. Freckles are a genetic trait and aside from using sunblock to inhibit their growth, they can only be removed through special lightening creams or laser treatments.
Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center in Duluth, just north of Atlanta, Georgia, can remove most freckles, age spots, brown spots and moles completely with just one treatment; occasionally two treatments are necessary to remove larger, more stubborn brown spots.
How do I know whether my darkened patches of skin are from sun exposure, melisma, or genetics?
Our licensed medical staff can examine your skin to determine the most likely cause and best treatment plan for your hyperpigmentation. In some cases, a combination of both hormones and sun damage may be the culprits. Laser treatments can be an effective way to treat both conditions and to give your complexion a rejuvenated look.
When will I see the results of my laser freckle removal or age spot removal treatment?
During your laser treatment, the energy from the laser will break down the unwanted pigment in your skin into smaller particles so that your body can naturally absorb and eliminate it. Because of this process, you’ll be able to see your age spots or freckles gradually fade over the course of the next several weeks or months. In some cases, a follow-up treatment may be needed to address all the pigment.
Will my freckles or age spots come back after laser treatment?
While the pigment that is removed by laser treatments does not return, new freckles or age spots can appear in the treatment area (or elsewhere). To make this less likely, it’s important to protect your skin from the sun as much as possible. Wear sunscreen every day, and, whenever possible, stay in the shade while you’re outdoors and wear opaque, sun-blocking clothing as well as a wide-brimmed hat. This is especially crucial in the first weeks after your treatment, because your skin will be more sensitive and sun exposure during this time can cause even more pigmentation problems.
