After Acne: Treatments to Reduce Scarring
It’s a heartbreaking story – you struggle with acne for years, but when you’ve finally beaten it and are trying to rebuild your self-esteem, you realize that the acne has been replaced not by clear, smooth skin, but by pitted scars. The good news is that this scarring doesn’t need to be permanent and you may still be able to have that blemish-free skin you’ve been searching for. At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, we help patients of all ages treat acne before, during and after it starts. Below we share a few facts about acne scarring and ways to properly treat it.
What causes acne scarring?
In general, scars are caused when your body produces either too much or too little collagen (a natural substance that supports the skin) during the healing process after an acne breakout. While it is never entirely predictable when acne will and will not cause scarring, generally, acne that does more severe damage to the skin is more likely to scar. Acne that is inflamed, untreated, or has been forcibly picked, squeezed, or popped is especially damaging to the skin and more likely to cause scarring.
How can acne scars be treated?
Acne scars can be treated with a variety of methods, including:
- Acne Laser Treatments – Laser resurfacing is one of the most effective ways to treat acne scars. In this treatment, lasers target and heal microscopic areas of the skin. When the treatments are completed, patients are often stunned at the results.
- SilkPeel® Rejuvenation Treatment– The SilkPeel® procedure is a new form of dermabrasion which uses topical medications tailored to condition-specific needs and is safe for all skin tones and types. - Chemical Peels – These procedures utilize a chemical solution to remove the topmost layer of skin to reveal the youthful and less scarred skin beneath.
