Maintaining the Results of Your Facial Rejuvenation with At-Home Skincare

At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, we take pride in helping our patients to look their best, whether through laser skin resurfacing, a chemical peel, or SilkPeel®–the newest form of microdermabrasion. But time and again, we’ve seen that the patients who experience the best, longest-lasting results are those who maintain an at-home skincare regimen. So to help our patients get the most out of their treatments and hold onto their younger look, we’ve laid out the basic elements of an effective daily skincare routine.

Wash your face twice per day.

Our skin comes into contact with countless tiny particles and debris throughout the day, so it’s no wonder that it can give our face a dull appearance or clog our pores and cause the occasional pimple. But, because excessive face washing can deprive your skin of the oils and nutrients it needs, it’s important not to over-wash, either. That’s why dermatologists recommend washing your face twice per day, plus any time you sweat significantly.

Here are a few tips to make your cleansing sessions as productive as possible:

Look for a cleanser that doesn’t contain alcohol and is formulated for your skin type (e.g., “oily skin,” or “sensitive skin”).
Don’t scrub. Simply dampen your face with warm water, apply the cleanser, and gently work it into a lather with your fingers, then rinse and blot dry with a clean towel. Scrubbing can irritate your skin.

Use daily moisturizer.

Moisturizer is one of the most effective anti-aging products you can buy. Our skin naturally becomes drier as we age, contributing to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Just as with a cleanser, look for a moisturizer that is formulated for your skincare concerns. The best time to apply moisturizer is immediately after a shower or bath, because it traps more moisture in the skin and becomes even more effective. But keep in mind that your other skin needs moisture too, not just your face, so make a habit of using body moisturizer as well as lip balm on a daily basis.

Use sunscreen every day, not just when you plan to spend time outdoors.

Most dermatologists agree that two of the best skincare products to slow aging before it starts are moisturizer and sunscreen. Not only can sun exposure lead to serious problems like skin cancer, but it can significantly speed up your skin’s aging. Age spots, for example, actually don’t come from age—they come from repeated sun exposure over time. The sun’s rays can be harmful even through windows and on cloudy days, so it’s best to build a sunscreen into your daily morning routine. To save you a step, you can even use a moisturizer with sunscreen included. Just be sure to look for a product that says “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” and has an SPF of 30 or higher.

We hear what you’re saying—this all sounds like great advice until you go to the skincare aisle in a drugstore and realize that there are dozens of options for each product. Don’t worry, we can help with that, too! Before any of our cosmetic treatments, the first step if a pre-treatment consultation and skin analysis. During this appointment, our expert aestheticians will examine your skin so that we can determine the right setting and specifications for your treatment. This exam will give you some valuable insight into your skin’s features and problem areas, and we can recommend the types of products that will work best for your skin type. To take the first step, schedule a consultation online. Or, to learn more about the services and products we offer, join us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.

Ask Laser Lights: What Cosmetic Treatments are Popular for Men?

Uncategorized Atlanta acne scar reduction, Atlanta Botox, Atlanta chemical peel, Atlanta dermal fillers, Atlanta facial rejuvenation, atlanta laser hair removal, atlanta laser skin resurfacing, Atlanta microdermabrasion, Atlanta SilkPeel, Atlanta tattoo removal

Our society used to have the perception that women’s primary concern was their appearance, while men’s primary concern was their career. In the past few years, these perceptions have changed as we progressively recognize the complicated and three-dimensional nature of individuals’ personalities. One result of this more evolved thinking is that men are becoming more comfortable with putting effort into their appearance, and are recognizing that like women, they deserve to be confident in their own skin. Whether it’s for personal or professional reasons, cosmetic procedures for men are becoming increasingly frequent. At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, we’re often asked about the most common ways that men seek our cosmetic help, and below are a few of the most popular procedures for our male patients. Infographic Cosmetic Procedures in Men

Laser Hair Removal – Women aren’t the only ones who want to show off silky smooth skin without the hassle, time, and cost of daily shaving sessions. For many men, laser hair removal can end their need to choose between the obligation of daily shaving and the confident feel of a less-hairy physique. Each hair on our body has its own follicle from which it grows, and by sending light energy into the hair follicles, laser treatments can stop the follicles’ ability to grow hair. Most commonly, men request the procedure on the chest, abdomen, face, or back, and when they’ve completed the recommended number of treatments (as determined based on the skin type, hair tone, and other variables), they can enjoy long lasting results.

Tattoo Removal – There are any number of reasons for choosing to have a tattoo removed, whether a man has outgrown the tattoo’s design or message, or whether it’s holding back his career. Regardless of the reason, many of our male patients request laser tattoo removal. During this procedure, one of our medical-grade lasers sends energy into the skin to target the tattoo ink. This energy breaks up the ink into microscopic particles, which allows the body to naturally absorb and eliminate the ink. The number of treatments needed depends on the patient’s skin type, when/how the tattoo was applied, the color and type of the ink used, and other considerations, but completing all the recommended treatments has allowed our many male patients to achieve great results.

Facial Rejuvenation – The desire to look as young and refreshed as we feel is far from gender-specific, and for men, there is a wide variety of ways to achieve a younger, more masculine-looking face. Some men prefer cosmetic facial injections, like Botox® or dermal fillers, to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. However, many men have other signs of aging as well, such as brown age spots that result from years of sun exposure. For these men, treatments like SilkPeel® (the new wave of microdermabrasion) can treat a number of conditions at once by removing dead and damaged skin while applying a topical compound that meets their specific needs. Another option that addresses multiple signs of facial aging is fractionated laser skin resurfacing, which uses a laser to create tiny, precise perforations in the skin, causing the body to produce more collagen (the substance that gives skin youthfulness and elasticity).

Acne Scar Reduction – For many men, whether they’ve been acne-free for decades or are still combating breakouts, acne scars are just a more persistent version of the pimples themselves. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to address facial scarring, which generally occurs when the body produces too much or too little collagen while trying to heal the skin. Forms of dermabrasion can be effective in treating scars that are raised above the skin’s surface, and other rejuvenating treatments like laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels have proven effective in scar reduction as well.

For men who, like most of us, would feel more confident with a few tweaks to their physical appearance, there are now a number of cosmetic options. To meet with one of our experienced providers and develop a plan to address your aesthetic concerns, schedule a consultation online and, in the meantime, join us on Facebook, and Twitter for daily tips and information about our services.

After Acne: Treatments to Reduce Scarring

It’s a heartbreaking story – you struggle with acne for years, but when you’ve finally beaten it and are trying to rebuild your self-esteem, you realize that the acne has been replaced not by clear, smooth skin, but by pitted scars. The good news is that this scarring doesn’t need to be permanent and you may still be able to have that blemish-free skin you’ve been searching for. At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, we help patients of all ages treat acne before, during and after it starts. Below we share a few facts about acne scarring and ways to properly treat it.

What causes acne scarring?

In general, scars are caused when your body produces either too much or too little collagen (a natural substance that supports the skin) during the healing process after an acne breakout. While it is never entirely predictable when acne will and will not cause scarring, generally, acne that does more severe damage to the skin is more likely to scar. Acne that is inflamed, untreated, or has been forcibly picked, squeezed, or popped is especially damaging to the skin and more likely to cause scarring.

How can acne scars be treated?

Acne scars can be treated with a variety of methods, including:

Acne Laser Treatments – Laser resurfacing is one of the most effective ways to treat acne scars. In this treatment, lasers target and heal microscopic areas of the skin. When the treatments are completed, patients are often stunned at the results.
SilkPeel® Rejuvenation Treatment– The SilkPeel® procedure is a new form of dermabrasion which uses topical medications tailored to condition-specific needs and is safe for all skin tones and types. To stay updated on innovative new technologies like the SilkPeel® rejuvenation treatment, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.
Chemical Peels – These procedures utilize a chemical solution to remove the topmost layer of skin to reveal the youthful and less scarred skin beneath.

Because all these services are available at Laser Lights, our providers are familiar with each treatment and can recommend the option that is best suited to your acne scarring needs. Schedule an appointment on our website or give us a call at your convenience to start kissing those scars good-bye!

Are At-Home Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peel Treatments Safe?

Educational, Frequently Asked Questions, Skin Care, Uncategorized Atlanta chemical peel, Atlanta microdermabrasion, Atlanta skincare, laser procedures Atlanta, laser skincare Atlanta, laser surgery Atlanta

They claim to deliver everything you could expect from a spa-quality experience, but are they really a safe, effective option? At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, we understand the temptation to opt for lower-priced, more immediately accessible microdermabrasion and chemical peel treatments. You can just pick up a kit at the drugstore and do it yourself in the comfort of your own home. No waiting or appointment necessary.

Easier? Yes. Cheaper? Certainly. But worth it? That’s another story.

skincare at home We’ve all heard the expression, “You get what you pay for.” That’s especially true when it comes to professional skincare. Laser Lights prides itself on offering high-quality, affordable treatments for everyone, but affordable is not the same as cheap. When you opt for low-quality products in the interest of saving money, your skin could pay the price in the long run.

While at-home microdermabrasion and chemical peels are not exactly dangerous, they are:

Not personalized. At-home microdermabrasion and chemical peel kits are not client-specific. You can purchase a kit for your skin type, but without the guidance of a professional, you can’t be sure of getting a kit that meets your skin’s present and future needs.
Less effective. Drugstore kits contain a significantly lower concentration of the components used in professional-grade microdermabrasion and chemical peels. Only licensed aestheticians and physicians have access to maximum-strength materials.
Noncumulative. Once you’ve used up the kit, your investment is used up, too. Professional-grade microdermabrasion and chemical peels have a cumulative effect; in other words, they begin to provide long-term benefits the first time you receive them and are an investment in the health of your future skin.
Not well regulated. The production of at-home microdermabrasion and chemical peel kits is not as closely monitored as many providers would like. First, fillers or abrasive ingredients may be present in at-home kits made by manufacturers trying to mimic the quality of a spa-like microdermabrasion treatment or chemical peel at a substantially lower price. Second, many at-home kits cannot guarantee that your skin receives the correct amount of the correct ingredients. Some, for example, instruct you to simply soak a cotton ball in the product, and then apply it to your face.
