Debunking 3 Common Myths About Wrinkles & Skin Aging
Like the old saying goes, “Father Time is undefeated.” It’s true in life, and it’s certainly true for our skin. And when we think of the ways that aging can affect a person’s skin, wrinkles are understandably the first thing that comes to mind for many people. Wrinkles are inevitable, but they can affect some people in different ways (and at different points in life) than others.
To help our readers sort fact from fiction and get a better understanding of how they can rejuvenate their facial skin, our aesthetic experts thought it would help to debunk a few common myths about wrinkles and how they can be treated.
Myth #1: Facial Fillers & Botox® Address Wrinkles The Same Way
While facial fillers and neuromodulators like Botox® Cosmetic Injections can both be used to treat facial wrinkles, they do so differently (and in different areas of the face). Our expert cosmetic injectors use fillers like Juvederm® or Radiesse® to smooth out the skin and increase lost facial volume in the lower portion of the face (including around the mouth). This is done with the help of naturally occurring substances like hyaluronic acid.
Botox® and Dysport® injections tackle wrinkles differently. These treatments effectively block the chemical signals that cause facial muscles to contract. When injected into muscles in affected areas, these wrinkle-causing contractions will be halted, eliminating wrinkles and fine lines. Unlike fillers, we normally use these treatments in the upper portion of the face, including between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and in the forehead.
Myth #2: Wrinkles Are The First Sign of Aging Skin
This isn’t the case. Although we typically associate skin aging with wrinkles, as well as skin laxity, and skin discoloration, there are more subtle warning signs for people to be aware of. Some people notice things like dark circles or hollow skin under their eyes, or slight folds around their mouth long before wrinkles emerge. Being aware of these more minor age signs can provide motivation to take a more proactive approach to skin care.
Myth #3: Chemical Peels For Wrinkles Can Damage The Skin
This is false. In fact, chemical peels are among the most effective treatments to combat wrinkles in many cases. Chemical peels use small amounts of chemical solution that is applied to the surface level of the skin. The solution is then able to peel this most superficial layer of skin, to reveal the more vibrant, healthy, and younger-looking skin beneath it. We offer chemical peels of varying strengths depending on the extent of facial aging that each patient is experiencing.
