Common Habits That Are Giving You Wrinkles
Did you know wrinkles aren’t purely caused by aging? Time alone does cause wrinkles eventually, but most of us are making our wrinkles worse or starting them prematurely because of simple bad habits in our lives.
You probably already know that smoking and other forms of nicotine use will cause premature wrinkles. There are plenty of other habits you might have in your day-to-day life, including practices you don’t think of as “bad habits,” that can make you age more quickly or make your wrinkles more severe. Our anti-aging experts at Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center are explaining some of these top wrinkle-causing habits.
Sleeping on Your Side or Belly
If you’re a side sleeper or a belly sleeper, you could be developing unnecessary wrinkles in your sleep. In these positions, your facial skin is pressed against your pillow, often forming creases in your skin. When you repeat this every night, it can cause wrinkles to form. Side sleeping also often causes chest wrinkles, especially in women, because of the way your chest skin bunches together while you sleep.
Drinking from a Straw or Bottle
When you drink from a straw or a bottle like a water bottle, you purse your lips to create suction and take a sip. If you make that same motion over and over again, it can lead to vertical lines within and above your upper lip. These are often called smokers’ lines because they’re common in people who smoke but using a straw or bottle all day every day can produce a similar effect.
Staying Up Late or Waking Too Early
We all know sleep is important for our health, but you might not realize that it impacts your appearance too. Studies have linked insufficient sleep with premature aging and stubborn wrinkles, so the term “beauty sleep” might be more accurate than you realize.
Forgetting Your Sunglasses
Sunglasses, as simple as they are, are among the best tools for wrinkle prevention. They help you prevent wrinkles around your eyes in two ways. First, they reduce your need to squint on sunny days, and squinting can accelerate or cause crow’s feet.
Second, sunglasses block some of the UV exposure from the delicate skin around your eyes. Sun exposure can cause discoloration as well as a loss of skin-firming collagen, so minimizing it with sunglasses goes a long way.
