The Ins and Outs of Cellulite: Part 1
The term gets tossed around often enough, but what exactly is cellulite? It goes by many less pleasant titles, such as cottage cheese skin, hail damage, and the mattress phenomenon – which give a little more insight into the condition than you may think. Fat deposits just below the surface of the skin give it a dimpled appearance – this appearance is what we call cellulite and it most often appears after puberty around the abdomen, lower limbs, and pelvic region.
Cellulite is classified in 3 different grades of severity. Grade 1 has no clinical symptoms but anatomical changes can be spotted via microscopic examination of cells. Grade 2 is the most common grade: visible dimpling occurs along with a more pallid skin tone, lowered skin elasticity and an overall cooler temperature. Grade 3 is more of an advanced Grade 2 – the dimpling becomes so severe the skin becomes rough like an orange peel.
