Acne blemishes can be embarrassing whether you’re a teenager or an adult. The characteristic blotches and pimples occur when the skin produces too much oil and mixes with dirt, dead skin, and bacteria to clog the pores. While it’s most commonly seen in teenagers, acne can occur at any age and can be brought on by hormones, certain medications, and particularly oily cosmetics.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is thought to eliminate the signs of acne by shrinking the oil glands that overproduce and clog pores with sebum, kill the bacteria within the pores, and regulate the shedding of dead skin cells.
During treatment, a photosensitizing treatment will be applied to the affected area to make the skin more receptive to light. The skin is then exposed to a blue light source set at a specific wavelength that “activates” the photosensitizing agent. Depending on the severity of the condition, multiple treatments may be needed over a period of several weeks in order to completely eliminate pimples and redness.
