Age spots, or liver spots, are caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun over a lifetime. Because they are generally associated with sun exposure, they appear most often on the face, hands, shoulders, arms, and even on the head if there is no hair to protect the scalp. While they pose no threat, sometimes they can get in the way of properly detecting skin cancer. However many individuals prefer to eliminate these signs of aging for cosmetic reasons.
Melanin is a dark pigment present in the skin and is produced by melanocytes; it is the main factor in skin tone as well as the formation of moles, freckles, and some brown age spots when this pigment multiplies. Freckles are a genetic trait and aside from using sunblock to inhibit their growth, they can only be removed through special lightening creams or laser treatments.
Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center in Duluth, just north of Atlanta, Georgia, can remove most freckles, age spots, brown spots and moles completely with just one treatment; occasionally two treatments are necessary to remove larger, more stubborn brown spots.
Melasma is a common skin condition that has a single symptom: spots of dark skin discoloration on sun-exposed areas of the face. Melasma is typically associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone and often effects pregnant women, women who take oral contraceptives, and women undergoing hormone replacement therapy during menopause. The signs of permanent melasma can be reduced through similar laser treatments used in age spot and freckle removal.
By targeting the darker pigment in the skin, or the melanin, laser treatments can help break up age spots and hyperpigmented areas causing them to be absorbed by the body and sparing the surrounding tissue.
