Discover the Benefits of Massage Therapy

Getting a professional massage is one of the best ways to relax, unwind, and escape the pressures of everyday life. But according to an article by the Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP), a national membership association for massage/bodywork practitioners and students, massage therapy can a have a plethora of additional benefits for your mind and body. Here are just a few of our favorites:
• Alleviate stress. Medical practitioners for years have said that many diseases are related to stress level. Massage therapy can help to decrease anxiety and relax the mind and body – a great way to manage stress.
• Pain management. Especially for people with chronic pain, massage therapy can be a great treatment to alleviate pain and improve your overall range of motion. Experienced massage therapists will tailor a treatment plan based on your painful problem areas. Massage also aids in endorphin release, which works to alleviate pain – whether it is pain from exercise or even a migraine!
• Boost your immunity. Did you know that massage therapy improves your lymph flow? This works to boost your body’s immune system and prevent illness.
• Assist in athletic training. Massage therapy can be a great way to unwind your muscles, and help you to recover from strenuous exercise. It can also help to prepare your muscles for upcoming events or intense training.
• Improve circulation and tissue regeneration. Through the working of the muscles, massage therapy gets your blood flowing, which improves overall circulation. This aids in regeneration of healthy tissue, which can reduce scar tissue and stretch marks.
Many research studies have also been done on the benefits of massage –which has showed some interesting benefits for specific groups of people. For example, massage has been shown to improve airflow and pulmonary function in children with asthma, has reduced itching and pain in burn victims, and has reduced cramping and bloating in premenstrual women. While the validity of these claims warrant more testing, the existing and potential benefits of massage are exciting to discover!

We recently started offering massage therapy at Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center. Our in-house, licensed massage therapist, Chad Moon, is now offering 1 hour massages for only $40! Call our office today to schedule a consultation, and to start reaping the benefits of massage therapy!

Your Tattoo Run Out of Luck? Laser Lights Offers Laser Tattoo Removal

It’s Not Easy Removing Green- Laser Lights Tackles Tough Tattoo Removal

In Western culture, tattoos can carry unfavorable and unwarranted stereotypes. Thus, it’s not too surprising that a whopping 7 million people (that’s 16%) of America’s tattooed population eventually grows to regret their decision to get a tattoo. Lucky for those 7 million, Laser Lights offers laser removal services for permanent tattoo removal. Unlike other laser treatment centers, Laser Lights can even make stubborn chromium-based green ink less noticeable.

Laser tattoo removal regiments are developed according to a variety of factors including: the skin type of the tattoo bearer, the colors/dye types used within the tattoo, placement of the tattoo, and the age of the tattoo. The information from these factors, known to scientists as “reflectance spectra data”, determines the specific laser wavelength needed to obtain the most effective results.

Even with the advancement in reflectance spectra data research methods, color additives used in tattoos are only federally approved for topical cosmetic use, not injection into the skin. Reports published by the FDA in 2008 also caution that “many pigments used in tattoo inks are not approved for skin contact at all. Some are industrial grade colors that are suitable for printers’ ink or automobile paint.” Taking that into consideration, the professionals at Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center meticulously evaluate patients and their tattoos when developing a removal plan.

Using FDA approved removal equipment exclusively; Laser Lights can typically remove most tattoos through a course of a few treatments scheduled 4-6 weeks apart. If you have any questions about tattoo removal services at Laser Lights, visit our website or call our office at (770) 495-9322 to schedule a consultation.

Laser Lights Discusses Tips for Laser Hair Removal Aftercare

Laser Hair removal is one of our most popular procedures – and for good reason! Laser Hair removal can give you smooth, hair free skin relieving you from the hassles of shaving, waxing, and messy bleaching creams. Once you have made the decision to undergo laser hair removal, you need to make sure that you are taking care of the treated area to optimize your results. Below are some basic, easy tips on how to take care of your skin after a laser hair removal treatment.

• Avoid irritating the treated area; that means no picking, scrubbing, or scratching!
• Avoid Shaving! Once the hair follicle is dead from laser treatments, you must allow the remaining hair to be naturally pushed out of the skin. So be patient, and let the hair fall out. Shaving could cause major irritation to the area.
• Laser Hair Removal can be a little uncomfortable, but any pain typically disappears within a few minutes after treatment. If you are experiencing prolonged discomfort, use a cold compress to sooth the area. If pain persists, contact you laser hair removal specialist.
• Avoid soaps and cleansers with fragrance, as it can irritate the skin. We recommend a mild soap that is fragrance free.
• Avoid the sun! You don’t want to future damage the skin, or aid in scarring, so you need to avoid sun exposure to a newly treated area. If being in the sun is unavoidable, try covering the area with clothing or use a high SPF sunscreen.
• Avoid strenuous exercise the day of the treatment – your sweat may irritate the hair follicles.
• After a few days after treatment, you can gently exfoliate the skin to aid the shedding of dead hair. Be careful not to scrub too hard and irritate the area.
• If you get hair removal of the armpit, avoid deodorant application for about 48 hours.
• If you experience any unusual pain or problems your laser hair removal specialist immediately!

Laser Hair Removal is a safe and effective process, but you must make sure that you do your part in safe aftercare of the area. And as always, make sure you visit qualified laser hair removal specialists, like the staff at Laser Lights, for all your hair removal needs!

Interesting Study about the Relationship between Tattoos & Deviant Behavior

There has long been a stigma about tattoos and being “bad to the bone” – or in other words, there is a popular association between tattoos and deviant behavior. Considering this, a group at Texas Tech University conducted a decade long study to find a link between the two.

Their findings do suggest a link between body art and deviant behavior but only for those who have “inked up” or accessorized their bodies in extreme ways. The study not only asked about the number and size of tattoos on their body, but inquired about behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, sexual activity, and academic cheating.

Findings suggested that people with 1-2 tattoos or 1-3 piercings responded similarly to those with no tattoos or piercings, however there was a sharp increase in the level of deviant behavior in those who responded as having 4 or more tattoos and 7 or more piercings.

Says a quote from the research paper: “Results indicate that respondents with four or more tattoos, seven or more body piercings, or piercings located in their nipples or genitals, were substantially and significantly more likely to report regular marijuana use, occasional use of other drugs, and a history of being arrested for a crime. Less pronounced, but still significant in many cases, was an increased propensity for those with higher incidence of body art to cheat on college work, binge drink and report having had multiple sex partners over the course of their lifetime.”

The researchers also noted the fact that tattoos and multiple piercings have become much more mainstream in recent years.

Linked to deviant behavior or not, if you have a tattoo that you wish to have removed, Laser Lights offers laser tattoo removal for tattoos of all colors. Contact us for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Introducing the latest addition to the Laser Lights Team – Chad Moon! Now Offering Massage Services

Laser Lights is proud and excited to introduce Chad Moon, our licensed massage therapist now offering massage services! Massages are the newest addition to Laser Lights list of services, and for a limited time, we are offering hour massages for just $30! The perfect gift for your Valentine!

Below is a personal introduction letter from Chad:

I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, mostly between Idaho and Oregon. I went to the Utah College of Massage Therapy in Salt Lake City, UT and began working in Jackson Hole, WY after graduating. Being an avid Skier/Snowboarder and all around fan of the mountains, this was an amazing place to live. I spent a total of 3 1/2 years at The Rusty Parrot Lodge and Spa which was ranked the #1 Resort in the Continental US, by the readers of Travel and Leisure Magazine. I’ve also worked in Squaw Valley, CA near Lake Tahoe, and was then employed by a Chiropractor in Charleston, SC. It was quite a change of pace moving from the West to the South East, and after 2 years in Charleston I needed to get back to an environment near lakes, rivers, and hills.

I have been living in Gainesville, GA since October 2009, and feel like I’ve found a place that I would like to buy some property and become part of the community. I love NE Georgia for the mild climate, friendly people, access to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and proximity to the ocean. I’m looking forward to being the person you come to see when you’re in need of professional bodywork. My specialty is Therapeutic Massage: combining Swedish, Sports, Deep Tissue, and Trigger Point Therapy. I’ve been a Professional Massage Therapist for over 8 years and in 2008 became a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to be a part of your preventative health care needs.

Sincerely, Chad Moon, LMT

Skin Damage from Harsh Winter Temperatures? Microdermabraison Could Be the Answer

One thing that Atlantan’s are not used to is snow – as evidenced by the flurries last week that caused school systems to shut down and families to run to their local grocery stores to stock up on bread and milk. Living in a relatively warm Atlanta climate, your skin is also not used to the harsh, cold, and dry conditions that come with the winter months.

One of the most effective treatments in refreshing the look of the skin is microdermabrasion. More commonly referred to as “microderm”, microdermabrasion is a nonsurgical exfoliation procedure that partially or completely removes the outer layer of dead skin cells (known as the stratum corneum). The procedure is painless, relatively quick, and leaves you with a fresh, healthy layer of skin on your face.

Microderabrasion is not just effective for climate damaged skin, but can smooth and soften the skin from sun damage and can reduce the look of some fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring.

For more information on microdermabrasion, or to schedule an appointment with an experienced member of Laser Lights staff, call us at 770.495.9322.

Tanning Bed Tax Proposed as Part of Healthcare Reform Bill

The Senate announced last week a proposed tax on indoor tanning salons to help pay for the new healthcare plan. The 10 percent excise tax on tanning beds would replace the formerly proposed ‘Botax’ or 5 percent tax on all elective cosmetic surgery procedures.

While the ‘tan tax’ would definitely cost tanning bed goers more money – it cannot compare to the cost of tanning beds on your skin’s health. The dangers of ultra-violet radiation are undeniable, causing wrinkles, fine lines, deeper furrows, uneven skin tone and texture, and skin cancer. In fact, a study published earlier this year confirmed tanning beds as a definite cause of skin cancer.

Here at Laser Lights, a huge percentage of our patients enlist our services just to get rid of the skin damage caused from exposure to the sun and use of indoor tanning salons. To avoid further damage to your skin, you should make sure to limit your sun exposure and avoid using the tanning bed. To correct damage that has already been made to your skin, we provide a variety of services, including laser skin resurfacing, microdermabraison, injectables (BotoxÂŽ, DysportÂŽ, etc.) and chemical peels, to help minimize and even reverse the look of sun damaged skin.

We also carry a variety of skin care products, available online or on-site at Laser Lights for your convenience.
