Medical Grade Lasers for Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is an effective way to eliminate unwanted hair, providing individuals with permanent results.  Both men and women frequently choose hair removal for areas like the face, chest, legs, underarms, arms, back, and bikini area.

atlanta laser hair removalAt Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, our experienced laser specialists use only FDA approved, medical grade lasers when performing a treatment. Medical grade lasers are important as they emit focused laser beam, coupled with highly trained laser technicians to provide patients with excellent results.  These lasers allow the technician to adjust and customize settings to a patient’s skin type and hair color. During an initial consultation, we will discuss your desired results for hair elimination while determining how many treatments may be needed.  In general, patients will need at least two to six treatments as the treatment only works when the hair is in its growth cycle.

Our lasers use a high-energy beam of light that can transfer energy through the skin, targeting the hair follicle. The follicles that produce hair are then damaged, inhibiting future hair growth, as they’re heated.  Sometimes patients confuse IPL, or intense pulsed light, with laser hair removal. IPL uses a full spectrum of light wavelengths rather than a single beam of light. With the broader spectrum, IPL treatments can be less precise than laser hair removal which can also lead to an increase risk of burns if not performed by an experience provider.

What’s the Difference Between Laser Hair Removal for the Face and Body?

atlanta laser hair removalBoth men and women develop body and facial hair, although facial hair for women tends to be more fine and lighter in color. At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, our licensed professionals understand that hair removal is unique depending on each patient’s skin as well as the area of desired hair removal on the face or body.

Vellus hair is the short, fine, and unpigmented hair found on most of the body. However, the density of hair or the amount of hair per area of skin varies for each individual.  This is the type of hair that women tend to have on their face while male facial hair will grow darker and thicker. Since the face tends to be more sensitive and delicate than other areas of the body, the lasers’ settings are adjusted to appropriately target hair follicles without harming the surrounding skin.

Our FDA-approved, medical grade laser equipment is safe for hair removal on both the face and body including popular areas such as the bikini, legs, underarms, arms, face, and chest. Our certified laser hair removal technicians discusswith each patient their desired results and expectations. During consultation, they will be able to determine the number of treatments needed based on each patient’s skin color, hair color, and hair texture.

Laser Hair Removal Myths Debunked

Laser hair removal is one of the most media-circulated terms in the country today. Billboards, commercials, and websites now advertise and discuss laser hair removal like never before. With such high amounts of media chatter about this type of procedure, it’s important to approach the topic objectively.  At Laser Lights, our licensed professionals are committed to providing you with factual and educational information about laser hair removal procedures. Below, Laser Director Patti Daniel responds to some of the most widely circulated laser “myths.”

Q: “Laser hair removal doesn’t work on certain skin and hair colors.”

A: “Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair and impeding the ability for the underlying hair follicle to grow hair.  Thus, lasers cannot easily target the follicles of fair-haired individuals.  Fortunately there are other methods, such as electrology that can effectively eliminate body hair.  It is also true that some skin tones (usually darker) are more apt to discoloration by laser treatment, that is why Laser Lights offers an array of laser types to ensure that any risks are minimized.”

Q: “Laser hair removal is extremely painful.”

A: “Though everyone has a different pain threshold, most patients equate any discomfort from laser hair removal to the feeling of being snapped by a rubberband.  Because laser hair removal offers a permanent solution to the repeated discomfort of tweezing or waxing, any temporary discomfort is inconsequential to most patients.

Q: “Laser hair removal is way too expensive.”

A: Compared to the compounded costs of a lifetime of razor, cream, and waxing, laser hair removal is actually quite economical. Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center also offers regular specials and packaged deals to make their experienced professionals’ services more accessible.

Q: “Laser hair removal is dangerous.”

A: As with any medical procedure, laser hair removal does inherently carry risks.  This fact further necessitates the importance of entrusting a licensed professional to perform any laser procedure. The Laser Light’s personnel are fully trained and licensed to operate our lasers and perform laser procedures.

As the popularity of laser hair removal continues to grow, so does the technology and amount of available procedures.  For answers to other frequently asked question about cosmetic laser procedures click here.  You can also stay in the loop with the latest Laser Lights news by subscribing to our blog, visiting our website, and liking us on Facebook.

Body Hair Removal: We Discuss the Shift in Male Aesthetics

According to a recent article on Men’s body hair removal in The New York Times, a whopping 61% of American males between the ages of 18 and 29 report practicing some form of body hair removal.  It’s no surprise then that the body shaver industry grosses over $10 million dollars annually.  The professional Laser Hair Removal Specialists at Laser Lights have also noted the trend: scheduling an increased number of appointments for male patients.

The razor manufacturing company Philips Norelco released research that reports the most frequent areas for male body hair removal are the groin, armpits, and finally the chest and back.  Besides specialized razors, men have begun to utilize depilatory creams, waxing, and most effectively, laser hair removal for their revitalized grooming regimens.   Depending on the amount and type of hair to be removed, a series of six visits can rid you (or someone you know) of unwanted body hair.

Laser Lights of Atlanta has over 12 different medical grade lasers to aid in a range of skin issues: ranging from unwanted hair removal to wrinkles.  A professional consultation with a certified laser professional is necessary before a plan of care can be compiled.  If you are interested in learning more about the laser services Laser Lights of Atlanta performs or wish to schedule a consultation, visit our website.

Tips for Laser Hair Removal Aftercare

Laser hair removal is one of our most popular procedures – and for good reason!  Laser hair removal can give you smooth, hair free skin relieving you from the hassles of shaving, waxing, and messy bleaching creams.  Once you have made the decision to undergo laser hair removal, you need to make sure that you are taking care of the treated area to optimize your results.  Below are some basic, easy tips on how to take care of your skin after a laser hair removal treatment.

  1. Avoid irritating the treated area; that means no picking, scrubbing, or scratching!
  2. Avoid Shaving!  Once the hair follicle is dead from laser treatments, you must allow the remaining hair to be naturally pushed out of the skin.  So be patient, and let the hair fall out.  Shaving could cause major irritation to the area.
  3. Laser Hair Removal can be a little uncomfortable, but any pain typically disappears within a few minutes after treatment.  If you are experiencing prolonged discomfort, use a cold compress to sooth the area.  If pain persists, contact you laser hair removal specialist.
  4. Avoid soaps and cleansers with fragrance, as it can irritate the skin.  We recommend a mild soap that is fragrance free.
  5. Avoid the sun!   You don’t want to future damage the skin, or aid in scarring, so you need to avoid sun exposure to a newly treated area.  If being in the sun is unavoidable, try covering the area with clothing or use a high SPF sunscreen.
  6. Avoid strenuous exercise the day of the treatment – your sweat may irritate the hair follicles.
  7. After a few days after treatment, you can gently exfoliate the skin to aid the shedding of dead hair.  Be careful not to scrub too hard and irritate the area.
  8. If you get hair removal of the armpit, avoid deodorant application for about 48 hours.
  9. If you experience any unusual pain or problems your laser hair removal specialist immediately!

Laser hair removal is a safe and effective process, but you must make sure that you do your part in safe aftercare of the area. And as always, make sure you visit qualified laser hair removal specialists, like the staff at Laser Lights, for all your hair removal needs!
