Guide to Chemical Peels

With age, our skin eventually develops sun damage, age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles, but at Laser Lights, we offer a variety of treatments to minimize these concerns. Whether you’re just starting to see surface imperfections or searching for anti-aging results without surgery, we have something just for you. Since our chemical peels vary in strength, they are actually suitable for treating all types of skin conditions. If you’re not quite sure which chemical peel is right for you, check out our guide below.

It is important to understand that the name “chemical peel” comes from the treatment itself. During a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the outermost layer of skin after the skin is cleansed, which typically induces peeling to eliminate the dead, outer layer of skin revealing the undamaged skin underneath. Downtime depends on the strength of the peel, but is minimal. The amount of peeling that occurs with a chemical peel usually depends on the strength of the chemicals used.

The lightest peel we offer is our fruit acid peel, which is composed of glycolic and lactic acids to smooth rough skin, regulate acne, and even out hyperpigmentation. Patients like the fruit acid peel because it requires no downtime and they can show off their refreshed appearance right away. Other patients who are in need of a deeper peel like to use the fruit acid peel as a pre-treatment to the TCA peel (trichloroacetic acid). The TCA peel is one of the strongest peels we offer and is great for reducing fine lines, age spots and hyperpigmentation. Although the treatment is not painful, patients report discomfort during the first few minutes and redness and irritation immediately following treatment that eventually subsides. Patients that choose this treatment can expect up to a week of skin peeling.

Patients with dry, acneic skin benefit from our glycolic peel, which also targets fine lines, acne scars, and melasma while stimulating collagen production. Peeling should be expected for a couple of days depending on the peel’s acid concentration. As with all of our chemical peels, we can customize the chemical peel’s strength depending on your specific needs. Patients with sensitive skin who are looking for a deeper treatment than that of our fruit acid peel can enjoy our mandelic peel that uses acid derived from bitter almond extract. Patients report reduced acne and hyperpigmentation and increased collagen production with no downtime. Patients who mainly want to focus on acne and uneven skin texture should try our salicylic peel.

While not as strong as our TCA peel, the Jessner’s peel uses salicylic and lactic acids to improve signs of aging, but is also great for patients who have moderate to severe acne or those with acne scarring. Patients should expect up to a week of peeling with the Jessner’s Peel. The latest addition to our chemical peel menu, the Vi peel corrects sun damage, minimizes lines and wrinkles, reduces acne and acne scars, and evens out hyperpigmentation. Since the Vi Peel stimulates collagen and elastin production, patients report tighter, younger-looking skin within a week of their treatment.

Our chemical peels can be used alone or in conjunction with some of our other treatments. In fact, we even offer a micro laser peel, which incorporates components of microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, and chemical peel for a rejuvenated appearance. Before any treatment, our licensed estheticians take the time to thoroughly examine a patient’s skin to determine the right treatment for their skin condition, so schedule a consultation today even if you aren’t quite sure what you need. Visit our website to learn more about other services we offer. Stay posted to our Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ for skin care news and updates on special offers.

Prepare Your Skin for Summer

Between the pool parties and cookouts, skin care becomes less of a priority when summer begins. However, you can keep your skin looking great without missing out on any of the fun. Whether you’re traveling or staying in town, SPF 30 sunscreen should be your number one skin care product this summer. In fact, we suggest wearing sunscreen every day—even during the winter. Not only does sun exposure cause sun spots and wrinkles, it can also cause dangerous skin cancer.

When you go to grab your SPF 30 sunscreen, be sure to put on sunglasses also. Although we don’t always think about it, sun exposure can also damage the eyes causing conditions like cataracts. Additionally, you’re more likely to squint in bright sunlight, which causes wrinkles to develop more rapidly around the eyes. Certain wrinkle reducing laser treatments can improve an aged eye appearance, but during this time of year patients often seek cosmetic injectables like Botox® and facial fillers like Restylane® to reduce wrinkles. Many patients also like eyelash and eyebrow tinting services during the summer or try Latisse® to make their lashes grow longer, darker, and thicker so they won’t have to worry about going without mascara.

Skin care routines should change as the weather changes. Although the air is more humid in Atlanta this time of year, it’s still very important to moisturize. A lighter moisturizer can usually do the trick during the summer. Exfoliation is also beneficial during the warmer months in helping to remove the skin’s surface imperfections while sloughing away dead skin cells that clog pores. We offer various services to exfoliate the skin at Laser Lights including microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and facials.

When seeking summer skin treatments, it’s important to understand the sun can exacerbate certain skin conditions. Therefore, we conduct pre-skin treatment consultations to discuss patients’ skin conditions and thoroughly evaluate the skin before treatment. Patients with rosacea often experience flare-ups with exposure to sun and heat. We offer services to improve rosacea symptoms and tips about skin care products and steps patients can take to further relieve rosacea symptoms. Although rosacea sometimes resembles acne, they are two very different skin conditions. Contrary to popular belief, sun exposure does not improve acne. While we offer acne light therapy to reduce acne, the photodynamic therapy (PDT) used is very different from sunlight and works by shrinking oil glands, killing bacteria within pores, and regulating the shedding of dead skin cells.

We also offer a variety of laser procedures to treat skin conditions, but we ask patients who seek these procedures during the summer to use caution. Laser procedures and sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation, so we advise laser hair removal, laser tattoo removal, or other laser procedurepatients to stay out of the sun for a few weeks before and after treatment. Patients who know they will be spending most of their time indoors this summer shouldn’t have anything to worry about, but we advise these patients to wear sunscreen and protective clothing when they must go out in the sun.

Schedule a consultation today to learn more about which treatment will meet your skin’s specific needs as the seasons change. Be sure to view our website to learn more about the other procedures we offer. Hand Rejuvenation Services at Laser Lights

It is human nature for a person to be concerned about his or her appearance, especially of our faces since they’re almost always exposed. However, the hands are usually exposed just as often as the face, and to make matters worse, the hands often give away a person’s true age because there are few camouflaging options. Although many of the treatments we offer at Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center are designed to rejuvenate the face or body, we also offer hand rejuvenation services. As recently reported in an article by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, hand lift services are becoming more readily available for patients looking to mask signs of aging.

No one wants to wear gloves all of the time, especially not during the summer months. Environmental exposure combined with the natural aging process can cause the hands to appear aged. Patients who seek hand rejuvenation typically complain about lost volume, age spots (melasma), and unsightly veins. It is important to take care of your hands just like you take care of your face and other skin. Be sure to moisturize and wear an SPF 30 sunscreen on your hands every day. Paraffin wax treatments are perfect for softening the skin and locking in moisture to preserve a youthful appearance, but if you’re past the preservation stage, Laser Lights also offers treatments to repair signs of aging.

There are a variety of ways to even out the hand’s skin tone. Although most often considered facial treatments, Erbium laser treatment, chemical peels, and photo rejuvenation can be used to reduce sun spots, discoloration, and other pigmentation issues. Then, Dr. David Whiteman can inject dermal fillers (i.e. Restylane® or Radiesse®) into the hands to plump lost volume and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

If you’re interested in hand rejuvenation, laser treatments, or other services available at Laser Lights, schedule a consultation with one of our licensed estheticians today or visit our website to learn more. You can find the latest skin care news on our Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ profiles, so be sure to connect with us if you haven’t already.

Get the Best Laser Treatments and Results at Laser Lights

At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, we strive to ensure that every patient has the best treatment experience and best results possible. We provide educational information about our services during pre-treatment consultations as well as aftercare instructions before patients leave our office. If you’ve received a laser treatment or regularly keep up with our blog, you’ve most likely heard it’s important to avoid sun exposure for a few weeks prior to and following laser treatment. With summer quickly approaching, now is the perfect opportunity for laser treatment before summer vacation.

Due to the nature of laser procedures, sun exposure after laser treatment can cause hyperpigmentation. In fact, it’s best not to pursue laser treatment on suntanned skin to avoid pigmentation changes. All laser procedures are different—some skin conditions can be treated in just one session while others require multiple sessions. Laser treatments that require multiple sessions must be spaced four to six weeks apart to allow time for the skin to heal between sessions. Knowing how many sessions are required for each treatment can help you determine the best time to receive your desired laser treatment without risking hyperpigmentation.

Skin conditions like age spots, freckles, melasma, hemangiomas, and warts can usually be eliminated in as little as one laser treatment. Depending on the extent of the skin condition, additional treatment sessions may be required for optimal results. Additionally, some spider veins can be eliminated in as little as one treatment, but up to three treatments are often required for complete removal.

Other skin conditions like birthmarks, port wine stains, and laser skin resurfacing (wrinkle reduction) typically require a minimum of three laser treatment sessions for removal and rejuvenation. Birthmarks and port wine stains are usually darker than freckles, lie deeper within the skin’s surface, and are sometimes textured, which makes them more difficult to remove than freckles. Likewise, the number of skin resurfacing sessions necessary to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, melasma, and acne scarring with our CO2 Fractionated Laser or Erbium Laser varies from person to person, but most patients achieve desired results with a series of three treatments.

Laser hair removal, laser tattoo removal, and photo rejuvenation therapy typically require at least four to six treatments. Due to the natural hair growth cycle, some hairs are growing while others are in a rest phase. Though some patients see semi-permanent results after their initial treatment, laser hair removal is only effective during the hair growth cycle. The number of sessions required for laser tattoo removal depends on the age, depth, color, size, and placement of the tattoo. Since tattoos often fade overtime older tattoos are easier to remove than newer ones. Likewise, patients who seek photofacial treatment to reduce hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring will see results in one treatment, but multiple treatments may be necessary for optimal rejuvenation of the face, chest, arms, and hands.

We have over twelve different lasers to treat a variety of skin conditions and skin types at Laser Lights. As you can see, many treatment requirements vary from patient to patient. Our licensed estheticians can give you a better idea of how many sessions you will need after a pre-treatment consultation. Also keep in mind that if you usually wear protective clothing or are often indoors during the summer, you shouldn’t have to worry about hyperpigmentation. However, if you do have to go out in the sun after laser treatment be sure to wear at least SPF 30 sunscreen, cover the treatment area,  and don’t stay out longer than you must. Visit our website to learn more about our other services or schedule a consultation today to take advantage of laser treatment before summer. Just a Feel Good Treatment? Face the Facial

Laser Lights offers an assortment of facial treatments to improve overall condition of facial skin. Our menu of services for the face includes chemical peels, facials, microdermabrasion, facial rejuvenation, acne light therapy, and even laser treatments for the face. However, we have heard a rumor circulating that facials are just a “feel good” treatment. Offering an assortment of facials for patients of all ages, we thought we should explain some of the different elements that make our facials much more than just a good wash.

Facials at Laser Lights are therapeutic and medicated to treat a variety of skin conditions from acne and rosacea to wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. In fact, we can even customize our facials to treat your specific skin conditions. Before each treatment our esthetician analyzes your skin to determine the best treatment regimen, which isn’t always a facial. However, these “feel good” treatments are much stronger than most people think.

Our younger patients who still suffer acne breakouts can benefit from our acne facial that loosens and removes pore debris and blockages. We can’t lie, Atlanta facial treatments do feel good, starting with an esthetician who gently cleans the face then sprays the treatment area with a warm mist. Once the medicated ointment is applied and removed, the treatment concludes with a clarifying mask, light moisturizer, and protective mineral sunscreen. With a clearer complexion in the weeks following, you will know that there is more to a facial than just relaxation. Patients who are interested in our acne facial may also be interested in the teen facial (which also teaches teens to properly care for their skin) and our back facial (which takes care of acne breakouts on the back often referred to as “backne”).

Laser Lights also offers facials to reduce early signs of aging. Patients starting to notice fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, nose, and eyes can benefit from our anti-aging facial that uses a combination of alpha and beta hydroxyl (salicylic) acids to induce skin cell rejuvenation. Because of the chemicals used, the anti-aging facial can cause facial skin to appear flushed, so those with sensitive skin might prefer our European facial. This gentle treatment removes dead skin and surface debris and includes the application of a papaya mask to reduce redness and irritation. We also offer a facial specifically designed for men. This all-in-one men’s facial relieves tension and redness, and our estheticians instruct patients on sun damage protection and daily skin care.

Pore extractions are often combined with facials, but other treatments may be recommended as well. For instance, we often suggest that patients suffering acne alternate facial treatments and acne light therapy to get the most out of treatment. Patients who receive facials are often interested in skin care products so that they can keep their skin healthy at home.

Laser Lights Answers Commonly Asked Questions about Laser Spider Vein Removal

Q.) What are spider veins? What causes them?

Spider veins are small veins that form into tree branch-like formations close to the surface of the skin. They occur most often on the legs, though visible veins can sometimes occur on the face around the nose and on the cheeks. The direct causes of spider veins are unknown though some individuals—like those who are obese, women, or pregnant individuals—are more prone to spider veins. Any condition or situation that increases pressure in the vessels can lead to visible veins.

Q.) How does laser vein removal work?

During laser vein removal, laser light is adjusted to focus on the specific pigment of visible veins. During treatment, the laser targets the veins, causing them to break up within the body, and allowing the immune system to dispose of them naturally. Meanwhile, the surrounding tissue is left unharmed because the laser wavelength does not target that pigment.

Q.) Is it harmful to remove spider veins?

Spider veins and other visible veins are chiefly cosmetic issues and serve no major function. Therefore, eliminating them with laser vein removal does you no harm.

Q.) How does laser vein removal differ from other vein removal procedures like sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy involves multiple injections to destroy the vein, while laser vein removal at Laser Lights does not require needles. Studies have shown that laser vein removal patients suffer less pain during the procedure, as well as long after the treatment when compared with more traditional methods like surgical vein stripping. While all of these are effective methods, laser vein removal is less painful and a faster vein removal procedure.

Why Colder Months are Best for Laser Procedures: FAQ’s about Sun Exposure and Laser Skin Treatments

laser lights cosmetic laser centerQ.) What is the difference between hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of areas of the skin that is mostly non-permanent. It can be caused by sun exposure, medications, hormones, or genetics, although some laser treatments can often cause temporary hyperpigmentation as patients’ skin heals. Hypopigmentation is the permanent lightening or removal of pigment from areas of the skin which often develops as the skin reacts to trauma (such as a burn, some scars, etc.).

Q.) What causes hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation after laser cosmetic treatments?
Because laser skin treatments are light-based cosmetic procedures, they affect the way skin responds to light. Cosmetic laser treatments penetrate the top layers of the skin to affect the inner layers either to remove hair or to stimulate collagen growth, but it also temporarily weakens the skin’s defense mechanisms which can cause the skin to react differently to sunlight than it normally would.

Q.) How do I prevent hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation after laser hair removal?
Preventing pigment changes in your skin after a laser treatment is as easy as wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more and covering up areas of your body that have been treated if you can’t avoid sun exposure. If you’ve just had laser hair removal on your legs, for example, we recommend you wear pants or slather on the sunscreen if you plan on showing some leg to protect your skin from the sun.

Q.) Are hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation permanent?
Many laser treatment patients experience discoloration of the skin for a few hours to a couple of weeks after cosmetic laser treatments. However, not following the laser aftercare recommendations of Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center’s providers increases the chance that permanent pigment changes will occur.

Using Lasers To Stop Smoking!?

Laser therapy for cosmetic issues such as laser hair removal and laser wrinkle removal have taken the world by storm over the last several years. Laser therapies have even emerged for concerns like scar removal, tattoo removal, and birth mark elimination.  You’ve probably even read the headlines of celebrities like reality star Kim Kardashian who claim they’re “addicted to laser hair removal” and the time-saving convenience similar procedures provide.  But could it be possible that lasers might someday be used to help people eliminate addictions?

For an Arizona laser therapy center that day is swiftly approaching.  The Phoenix center recently revealed experimental findings about laser treatments that may aid patients in ceasing to smoke, drink, and even ease overeating.  The treatment, known as Bio Laser Therapy, applies a cold, soft laser beam to specific energy points in hands, ears, nose, and wrists. When a person tries to quit smoking, drinking, or using smokeless tobacco, they experience withdrawal symptoms. The laser acts as a calming agent to help reduce cravings, stress, and restore balance by emitting endorphins to the brain. The weight loss program helps patients to control appetite and stimulate organs which help metabolize fat into energy.

The center claims a 65-85% success rate with their stop-smoking program, but the FDA has yet to approve the treatment due to the limited amount of studies performed on this subject. Even though laser addiction removal may be a ways away, the possibility speaks to the versatility of laser technology.  To learn about what’s new in medical lasers and cosmetic laser treatments join the Laser Lights blog, Facebook, or Twitter conversations!
