Laser Lights Discusses Importance of American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery Membership

Laser Lights has been dedicated to staying at the forefront of laser technology and advancements since our office opened over 10 years ago.  We are focused on providing safe and effective laser treatments for patients in the Atlanta and Duluth areas. As a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) our office is committed to instituting the latest research, education and clinical care in the field of medical lasers.

According to their website, ASLMS was founded in 1980 and “is the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in patient care by advancing laser applications and related technologies.” This organization establishes practice guidelines and safety standards for the use of lasers, provides informative public information about laser treatment and publishes the world’s primary laser journal, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine. Demonstrated educational and practice experience is required to maintain an associate membership.

ASLMS includes a diverse group of individuals such as scientists, physicians and other health care professionals who are significantly involved with the laser industry. As there are many unique lasers specified for certain laser procedures a patient should make sure the provider only offers medical grade, FDA cleared or FDA approved lasers. When considering laser treatments it’s also imperative to find a qualified health care provider specializing in lasers and to look for American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery membership.

At Laser Lights we use over 12 different types of medical grade lasers to meet each patient’s specific skin needs. If you would like more information about our laser services, or would like to set up a skin analysis consultation, please contact our office today. Get the Best Laser Treatments and Results at Laser Lights

At Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, we strive to ensure that every patient has the best treatment experience and best results possible. We provide educational information about our services during pre-treatment consultations as well as aftercare instructions before patients leave our office. If you’ve received a laser treatment or regularly keep up with our blog, you’ve most likely heard it’s important to avoid sun exposure for a few weeks prior to and following laser treatment. With summer quickly approaching, now is the perfect opportunity for laser treatment before summer vacation.

Due to the nature of laser procedures, sun exposure after laser treatment can cause hyperpigmentation. In fact, it’s best not to pursue laser treatment on suntanned skin to avoid pigmentation changes. All laser procedures are different—some skin conditions can be treated in just one session while others require multiple sessions. Laser treatments that require multiple sessions must be spaced four to six weeks apart to allow time for the skin to heal between sessions. Knowing how many sessions are required for each treatment can help you determine the best time to receive your desired laser treatment without risking hyperpigmentation.

Skin conditions like age spots, freckles, melasma, hemangiomas, and warts can usually be eliminated in as little as one laser treatment. Depending on the extent of the skin condition, additional treatment sessions may be required for optimal results. Additionally, some spider veins can be eliminated in as little as one treatment, but up to three treatments are often required for complete removal.

Other skin conditions like birthmarks, port wine stains, and laser skin resurfacing (wrinkle reduction) typically require a minimum of three laser treatment sessions for removal and rejuvenation. Birthmarks and port wine stains are usually darker than freckles, lie deeper within the skin’s surface, and are sometimes textured, which makes them more difficult to remove than freckles. Likewise, the number of skin resurfacing sessions necessary to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, melasma, and acne scarring with our CO2 Fractionated Laser or Erbium Laser varies from person to person, but most patients achieve desired results with a series of three treatments.

Laser hair removal, laser tattoo removal, and photo rejuvenation therapy typically require at least four to six treatments. Due to the natural hair growth cycle, some hairs are growing while others are in a rest phase. Though some patients see semi-permanent results after their initial treatment, laser hair removal is only effective during the hair growth cycle. The number of sessions required for laser tattoo removal depends on the age, depth, color, size, and placement of the tattoo. Since tattoos often fade overtime older tattoos are easier to remove than newer ones. Likewise, patients who seek photofacial treatment to reduce hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne scarring will see results in one treatment, but multiple treatments may be necessary for optimal rejuvenation of the face, chest, arms, and hands.

We have over twelve different lasers to treat a variety of skin conditions and skin types at Laser Lights. As you can see, many treatment requirements vary from patient to patient. Our licensed estheticians can give you a better idea of how many sessions you will need after a pre-treatment consultation. Also keep in mind that if you usually wear protective clothing or are often indoors during the summer, you shouldn’t have to worry about hyperpigmentation. However, if you do have to go out in the sun after laser treatment be sure to wear at least SPF 30 sunscreen, cover the treatment area,  and don’t stay out longer than you must. Visit our website to learn more about our other services or schedule a consultation today to take advantage of laser treatment before summer. What Cosmetic Skin Treatments does Laser Lights Perform?

There’s more to Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center than just our laser treatments. We have a variety of spa services to offer patients. Since Laser Lights is co-owned by our laser director Patricia Daniel, R.N. and our medical director David Whiteman, M.D., F.R.C.S.(c), we are able to perform treatments with medical-grade equipment and the highest quality products. Although we offer services like laser hair removal, spider vein reduction, and skin resurfacing treatments, we still provide other non-laser services to boost your morale as well as your complexion.

While some patients visit Laser Lights for medical procedures such as wart or birthmark removal, others come for a relaxing massage or facial. If you aren’t sure what your skin needs, we start with a pre-skin treatment consultation to formulate a care plan just for you. Our younger patients who still suffer acne breakouts may benefit from acne light therapy, a chemical peel, microdermabrasion, or even an acne facial. However, our chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and facials aren’t just for acne sufferers—we offer a variety of types and strengths to benefit patients who are more concerned with signs of aging like sun spots, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles.

Although many of our services are intended to enhance the face, our menu also includes relaxing body treatments like hand rejuvenation, skin tightening, massage therapy, and paraffin wax for hands and feet. Hands can start to show signs of aging sometimes before the face. Often combined with facial rejuvenation treatments, we perform anti-aging treatments on the hands to increase moisture and reduce wrinkles.

Our non-surgical facelift alternative Viora Reaction™ improves skin texture through the power of radiofrequency energy and works to stimulate collagen production, tighten loose skin on the body, reduce cellulite, and even diminish the appearance of stretch marks.

If you’re interested in learning more about our services, both laser and non-laser, be sure to browse our website or contact us. Don’t forget that we offer monthly specials, so check our blog, Facebook, and Twitter regularly to make sure you don’t miss out.

What are my laser skin treatment options?

A look at our menu of laser services shows the variety of laser treatments we offer Duluth and Atlanta Laser Lights’ patients. However, since a list like this can seem overwhelming, we thought we’d break it down for you. By grouping laser treatments into three categories—spot treatments, anti-aging treatments, and removal treatments—we can guide you in finding the best cosmetic laser treatment to meet your skin’s needs.

laser treatmentsLaser Spot Treatments

Spot treatments are those laser treatments that help remove skin imperfections, whether they are age spots, freckles, warts, birthmarks, or even scars. Our lasers target the darker pigments within the skin, causing the spots to break up and be absorbed by the body. At Laser Lights, we use different lasers depending on the type and size of the issue we’re treating. The number of treatment sessions necessary for permanent, complete removal also depends on the spot’s size and type. Smaller spots like freckles, age spots, hemangiomas, and warts can usually be removed in one treatment. Larger and/or darker spots like birthmarks and port wine stains usually take up to three treatments spaced a few weeks apart for permanent removal. Although you should avoid sun exposure after any laser treatment to reduce the risk of hyperpigmentation, there is no downtime associated with laser spot treatments.

Anti-Aging Laser Treatments

Wrinkles, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, melasma, and rosacea can contribute to an aged appearance, but the providers at Laser Lights offer treatments to restore youthful looking skin. From our micro laser peel that combines the power of microdermabrasion, chemical peel, and laser technology for rejuvenation with minimal downtime to deeper treatments like CO2 Fractional Laser, we offer treatments for patients with a variety of facial rejuvenation needs. Most of our anti-aging laser treatments will produce the desired results in just one to three treatments, but it’s important to schedule a consultation to help determine which laser treatment (CO2 Fraxel, Erbium, Photofacial, etc.) will best meet your specific needs.

Laser Removal Treatments

laser lightsOur laser removal treatment category consists of those treatments that remove unwanted hair, spider veins, or even tattoos. Patients looking to rid themselves of hair on the legs, face, bikini area, arms, underarms, and chest can benefit from laser hair removal. Although semi-permanent results will be present after one treatment, we recommend up to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart due to the recurring nature of the hair growth cycle. Skin color, hair color, and hair texture can affect the amount of treatments required. Unsightly spider veins are often found on the face and legs. Our lasers target these veins, causing them to gradually disappear and be absorbed and dispelled by the body. Most patients see a reduction in the appearance of spider veins in just one to three treatments. Laser tattoo removal almost always requires multiple treatments, and the number of treatment sessions necessary is determined by the size, type, age, color, and depth of the tattoo.

It’s important to understand that whether or not the particular laser treatment you receive requires downtime, it is vital to avoid the sun for a few weeks prior to and following your treatments to minimize hyperpigmentation. For this reason, we recommend reserving laser procedures for the colder months, meaning now is the perfect time! If you do have to go out in the sun after a laser treatment, be sure to wear SPF 30 sunscreen as well as protective clothing. If you still aren’t sure which laser treatment will meet your needs, schedule a pre-skin treatment consultation today. Looking to get a “Reaction?” Try Laser Lights Newest Technology for Skin Tightening and Cellulite Reduction

Have you heard about the newest addition to Laser Lights’ services menu? Laser Lights offers a variety of laser and non-laser services to fight your specific aging concerns.  Reaction™ technology is especially beneficial because it can address the signs of facial aging and cellulite reduction.

Viora Reaction™ uses CORE™ technology (Channeling Optimized Radio-frequency Energy). Instead of a single RF wavelength, Reaction™ uses three RF modes simultaneously with vacuum therapy that stimulates collagen to tighten skin and helps break down adipocytes (fat cells). Aside from tightening skin, improving skin texture, reducing cellulite, and reducing the circumference of the treatment area, Reaction™ is also successful in eliminating stretch marks.  It treats stretch marks best on the underarms, calves, and hips.

Signs of aging begin to appear on the face through uneven texture, wrinkles, and uneven complexion. Reaction™’s unique RF modes improve the skin’s elasticity by stimulating collagen and elastin fiber production. Cellulite can show up almost anywhere on the body and is caused by shallow fat deposits beneath the skin’s surface. Reaction™ works to not only reduce cellulite, but also to reduce the size of the circumference in the treatment area by destroying targeted fat cells.

Although you’ll notice a difference after one Reaction™ skin tightening or cellulite reducing treatment, most patients receive multiple treatments for optimal Reaction™ results. For skin tightening, optimal results are usually achieved after three to five treatments. Most cellulite reduction patients undergo six to eight treatments to achieve their desired results.

Visit our website to learn more about Viora Reaction™ or the other skin care products and services we offer. Schedule a consultation for Reaction™ today and take advantage of the special introductory price listed on our specials page with other ways to save. Be sure to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Thinking about Laser Hair Removal, Tattoo Removal or Wrinkle Treatment? What to Look for in a Reputable Laser Treatment Center

laser lights

Because laser cosmetic treatment is so new, many patients are unaware that standards exist to regulate which practitioners and physicians can use the equipment and how it should be used. While the use of lasers for cosmetic and medical treatments seems like space-age technology, these criteria and rules help keep patients and physicians safe. More specifically, organizations like the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) regulate and determine the appropriate safety criteria for the medical and cosmetic use of lasers.

When looking for a reputable laser treatment center, it is important that the facility follow high standards of practice to ensure patient safety. The ASLMS lists training and education, patient and procedure selection, and patient safety as the three main determining factors in high standards of laser treatment practice. Continue reading

Do You Have Cellulite? Viora Reaction may be the solution!

Laser Lights Aestheticians Answer Common Questions About Cellulite Reduction with Viora Reaction™:

Q:  Can’t cellulite only be reduced by losing weight?
A: While the presence of cellulite is caused by heavy distributions of fat just underneath the skin that can’t be removed with Viora Reaction™, the treatments can noticeably reduce the appearance of the skin condition.

Q:  How does Reaction™ work?
A: Viora Reaction™ uses radiofrequency energy and vacuum-therapy suction to increase circulation to the cellulite afflicted area:  reducing the appearance of the dimpled fat associated with cellulite when treatments are performed regularly.

Q:  What areas can be treated with Viora Reaction™?
A: Because the system is topical, any skin area with enough fat can be treated.  The most common areas to receive Viora Reaction™ are the lower abdomen, thighs, and buttocks of men and women. In fact, Reaction™ can actually be used as an anti-aging treatment to tighten loose facial skin.

Q:  How many treatments are required for results?
A: Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center patients have reported noticeable results after only a few treatments; however, we usually recommend a six to eight treatments followed by less frequent follow-up treatments to optimize and maintain cellulite reduction results.

The Adaptability of Medical Lasers: Tattoo Removal to Wrinkle Reduction

Medical lasers have evolved into a technological niche that utilizes one premise:  concentrated waves of light, to produce very specific results.  As is the practice with chemical peels, which remove varying layers of skin for a rejuvenating effect, different concentrations and temperatures of laser light can target distinct issues.  For instance, as described in our “Using Lasers to Stop Smoking” blog we detailed the application of a cold, soft laser beam to control addictions like smoking and over eating.

In laser hair removal, laser light is absorbed by the pigmented portions of the hair follicles, destroying hair growth.  Conversely, laser hair therapy uses low level lasers to stimulate growth within the follicular cells by increasing circulation to the hair’s roots.  Low level laser therapy is gentle; carrying very limited risk of effecting surrounding tissues.  The lasers penetrate the scalp, revitalizing the cells that deliver nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles allowing hair to become thicker and stronger. The FDA approved the use of laser hair therapy in 2007 for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness. However, because the causes of the condition are so numerous, success cannot be guaranteed with the procedure.

The effectiveness of laser procedures lies in the act of selective degradation:  birth mark removal lasers target the pigmented regions to destroy colored areas while acne light therapy targets the acne-causing bacteria deep within pores.  Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center houses over 12 different lasers to accomplish everything from tattoo removal to wrinkle reduction for facelift-like results.   For more information these treatments or other procedures offered at Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center, visit our website, and continue to read our blog.

Laser Scar and Sun Spot Removal: Lessening the Signs of Injury and Aging

Scars are evidence of trauma inflicted upon the body.  Whether that trauma is intentional (i.e.- the result of a surgical incision) or the result of an accident, scars appear as a substitute covering that the body generates to replace the tissue that was affected initially.  While scars and markings give us playground credibility when we’re children, they’re not as welcome by adults in the professional world.
Laser Lights Cosmetic Laser Center offers a variety of cosmetic treatments effective in superficial scar reduction.  Just as the causes of scars are numerous, so are their cosmetic remedies.  For small, surface scars caused by small abrasions or lacerations, a surface treatment like microdermabrasion will often do the trick.  Microdermabrasion works to mechanically slough the outer-most layers of skin to reveal smoother, tighter, and unscarred layers beneath.
For larger areas of multiple scars (think acne scaring) and for areas of hyperpigmentation like age and sun spots, chemical peels can be used similarly to microdermabrasion treatments to remove outer, damaged layers of skin.  Laser resurfacing can also be utilized in minimizing the visibility of the affected area.  Fractionated and Fraxel type lasers are often used to help minimize scar tissue and hyper pigmenting for their unique ability to effectively target very specific areas without damaging the surrounding skin.  Fractionated lasers also carry the added benefit of stimulating new cell growth so the appearance of the treated skin will continue to improve after the initial treatment.

Because the last thing you want to face when having scars removed or brown spots eliminated is the possibility of obtaining any more markings, it’s pivotal that you only entrust qualified laser technicians and estheticians to administer your laser and/or cosmetic treatment(s).  Also important to note is the fact that some scar tissue, like that developed after an extensive injury or surgery, may be too thick or raised to treat through topical procedures and may require surgical excision.  After scar tissue is removed, a surgeon may suggest following with one of the aforementioned treatments to reduce the new, smaller scar’s appearance.
